History

The history of this sea side resort dates back from the first Moorish invasion in
AD711. The Moors, a mixed race of Arabs and Berbers from Morocco and North
Africa landed in Tarifa and within 4 months had virtually conquered the entire
country.
Even today the original city walls are woven into the whitewashed houses of
the old town, although most of what is seen today dates from the 18th century.
In Calle de Los Azogues, the buildings still date back to the 16th century.

castle is a magnificent statue of its local hero, saviour of the town.
  • To the East two high towers protect the entrance from the Arab town.
  • The Miramar gardens offer an extremely beautiful view of the shores of
    Morocco.
